A Thank You from Iraq

(Sent to Marsha True from Chaplain Ron Eastes for the food gifts received in December.)

Marsha,

Greetings from Iraq! I hope this missive finds you well. I did indeed receive the package in good order. Thank you and the kind folks of Kuhn Memorial! What a treat! I've passed on the goodies with love from you all to my folks. They didn't appreciate me hugging them. They really got mad when I kissed them and said it was from y'all! )

Thank you all for your thoughtfulness and support. I pray the Lord will deeply bless you all as you settle in and celebrate the incarnation of the God of the universe this Christmas! It's funny that, with all else that changes in the world around us, the love of God shining in the incarnation and redemption of his people crosses all ethnic and cultural bounds and never ceases. Folks will celebrate the incarnation here in Iraq. Some to there own peril. Lord's blessings.

Grace,
Ron Chaplain (Captain) Ron Eastes CFT 2-319 Chaplain

Presbyterian Historical Society Awards Heritage Microfilming

Grants

The Presbyterian Historical Society is pleased to announce that Kuhn Memorial Presbyterian Church, Barboursville, West Virginia; was one of only four Presbyterian churches in the United States to have received a 2007 Heritage Microfilming Grant from the Presbyterian Historical Society. The $250 grants, funded this year by Fourth Presbyterian Church (Chicago, Ill.), Bryn Mawr Presbyterian Church (Bryn Mawr, Pa.), and Friends of the Presbyterian Historical Society, will cover most or all of the cost of microfilming the congregations’ vital records including session minutes and church registers.

The Kuhn Memorial Presbyterian Church was established in Barboursville on November 16, 1914. Since its inception, the church has preserved over 3,800 pages of minutes of the meetings of its congregation, session, deacons, and women’s group. The church’s rich history is meticulously recorded and preserved in these documents. Records include the original hand-written minute book from 1914.

Microfilming is the best method currently available for the long-term preservation of records. Brittle paper, deteriorating bindings, fire, flood, and the rapidly changing electronic environment all pose substantial threats to records. Most paper produced since the mid-19th century contains acidic wood pulp which causes rapid deterioration of paper. Records may also be damaged or destroyed by water, fire, insects, or other natural disasters. Changing computer software and hardware, as well as the fragility of electronic media present preservation challenges as well. Archival quality microfilm has an expected life of 500 years and allows copies of records to be stored in several locations to minimize the chance of loss due to natural disaster.

The Presbyterian Historical Society established the Heritage Microfilming Grant program in 2001 in honor of its 150th Anniversary. Awarded annually to encourage and support the preservation microfilming of congregations’ official records, the grants go to Presbyterian Church (U. S. A.) congregations that have fewer than 250 members, are at least 50 years old, and demonstrate both preservation and financial need. PHS is grateful to Fourth and Bryn Mawr Presbyterian churches and the PHS Friends for their generous funding, their support of our work, and their commitment to assisting smaller congregations in preserving their records.

Serving the church since 1852, the Presbyterian Historical Society is the national archives and historical research center of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.). Headquartered in Philadelphia, with a records management program at the denomination’s headquarters in Louisville, Kentucky, it serves the church’s national agencies, middle governing bodies, and local congregations as well as scholars and the general public by collecting, preserving, and sharing information relevant to American Presbyterianism; and encouraging appreciation of the Church’s heritage.

Kuhn Kid Honored

"Ona Native Honored by Society as Wilderness Hero"

Brandon Dennison has always loved the outdoors. His admiration for nature was acknowledged by the Campaign for America's Wilderness and the Wilderness Society, with Dennison being named a "Wilderness Hero".

Dennison, a native of Ona, is a senior at Shepherd University in Shepherdstown. This year, he became involved with the West Virginia Wilderness Coalition and its efforts to protect Seneca Creek, East Fork of Greenbrier, the proposed Dolly Sods wilderness expansion and other areas in the Monongahela National Forest.

In June, Dennison organized a trip and took 17 young people to Washington to meet with the entire West Virginia congressional delegation. They presented a portfolio with pictures and poems about their love of the wilderness. "I've seen the effect that wilderness has on kids' lives firsthand," Dennison said. "It's incredible how they respond to the silence. They have so much noise in their lives with cars, TV's and such that they don't have a chance to experience quiet and silence."

Dave Saville, a coordinator for West Virginia Wilderness Coalition, said Dennison's commitment is an inspiration to all young people. "Brandon's leadership has helped introduce dozens of young people to wilderness and has helped instill in them a sense of appreciation for wild lands and for the greater environment in which they live," Saville said. "He has helped kids take responsibility for our public lands and empowered them to make a difference by getting involved. If

Dennison, who also works as a church youth leader, is set to graduate in May with a degree in political science but plans on staying to complete his job as a youth leader.
